ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: MASTER BATH | WEEK 2

If you are new around here, welcome and thanks for stopping by! I am Jessica, a design enthusiast and am so excited to be a guest participant in the Spring One Room Challenge. We are remodeling our 70’s master bathroom (aka the smallest bathroom you have ever seen). Check out week 1 to see our plans to remake our tiny master bath into a jewel box retreat.

WEEK 2 UPDATE

It’s week 2 of our master bath renovation. Let me catch you up to speed on what we have done so far. We demo-ed down to the studs and brought in an electrician and plumber to address all of the issues and bring the space up to code. In a nut shell, the plumber took out the existing vanity plumbing that was coming from the floor and moved it into the wall so we won’t be restricted to a vanity that covers floor plumbing. He also replaced the toilet and shower plumbing. Lastly, we had to shift the existing vent pipe over to the left so we could install a recessed medicine cabinet and wall sconce above the medicine cabinet.

Why a medicine cabinet? Since our master bathroom is so tiny and storage is lacking, we HAVE to have a medicine cabinet. There was a medicine cabinet when we moved in but it stuck out from the wall at least 5 inches. That is precious space wasted so I knew we had to recess our new medicine cabinet. In order to recess it we had to move the vent pipe and frame it out. We still have some framing to do for the medicine cabinet once the final electrical box goes in the wall.

For the electrical, we needed to move the wall switches to another location because they would be in the way of our pocket door. Honestly, there is not another perfect place for a wall switch but such is life. We moved it to under the window. It is a little low in my opinion but I do think this is the only acceptable location for it. We also had to move the bathroom’s only wall outlet. The old outlet was on the side of the vanity so we moved the new one into the wall near the new vanity.

FIXTURES

I originally bought a sconce but I just didn’t feel right about it. One good thing about COVID lead times is that they are so long that I have plenty of time to cancel my order. HA. I could not find a sconce I liked for the longest time and I was getting nervous because of long lead times. The options were limited since I am looking for a living brass finish and something that is under 17″ inches in width. It seems like the smaller the sconce the more expensive it is. I finally chose one but I am nervous that all my brass finishes won’t mesh well. I have unlaquered, natural, and brushed brass.

FABRIC SELECTIONS

Another thing I am trying to decide on is the fabric sections for the shower curtain and window treatment. I am going to DIY an extra-long shower curtain so I want a fabric that is going to be relatively easy to work with. I think I have decided on a linen-blend fabric. For the window treatment, I had a hard time deciding on a custom roman shade ($$) or a cafe curtain. I have always been drawn to cafe curtains for some reason, and since a roman shade would be costly to have made, I think I am leaning towards a cafe curtain. I also like the idea of having the sun shine through the top of the window while also providing privacy. For the cafe curtain fabric I wanted to bring in a botanical pattern. I think I have found a winner!

Looking at our to-do list, it seems overwhelming to me. It’s only week 2 of the One Room Challenge so at least we have a good amount of time. Next up on our to-do list is to install the pocket door frame and the hardware. We have never installed a pocket door and I am super nervous about it. We chose this gorgeous hardware and it looks super technical to install. Once we install the pocket door and its frame we can install new drywall and book our tile install. Yahoo!
